Carmen Webber, Sistahs of Harlem Come To Bowie State

carmenwebber.jpgLast night Bowie State University hosted Carmen Webber and Carmia Marshall of Sistahs of Harlem, for a special fashion design workshop with students in the Visual Communications & Digital Media Arts department and for the general public. Carmen, who was well put together in a Sistahs of Harlem Wangari Maathai tie neck top and plaid Judge Jane Bowlin Wool high waist skinny pants, spoke to starry eyed students about the troughs of making your way in the fashion industry and the importance of self promotion and supporting your community.

Junior Visual Communications & Digital Media Arts major Jonathan Swann credits his knowledge of marketing to the the program run at Bowie State University by Assistant Professor Tewodross "Tee" Melchishua.

"This is my first semester at Bowie State, and the biggest thing I've learned is the importance of self promotion and marketing," Swann stated in response to a question posed by Carmen to the students about their majors and what they will take away from their experience at the University.

"There are a lot of talented people, but what gets them out into the forefront is how they promote themselves.  Before coming here I didn't have a lot of background in developing a portfolio and making contacts through networking; but with the the classes that we're in now, I'm learning how to do that,"

soh_publications.jpgIf you’re even remotely into fashion, you remember Carmen from the 4th season of BRAVO TV's Project Runway. Her business partner, Carmia Marshall, is approbated for her brilliant costume design and styling for the movie American Gangter. Sistahs of Harlem have also been featured in Essence, Honey; and on VH1 and Style Network. Their manuscript, T-Shirt Makeovers: 20 Transformations for Fabulous Fashions features hip street chic manifestos of ways to cut, sew, and mend your way to a trendy original tee.  The book received rave reviews and perhaps inspired their latest venture – a new publication that will be released on March 4th entitled Denim Mania.  The book offers tips on how to transform your denim, both old and new, into fabulous tops, bottoms, jackets, and accessories. Their designs reflect a fusion of many influences, including the sassy street style of New York City, distant world cultures and the rich cultural legacy of Harlem.
